Milesight Sensors Offer Wireless Waste Bin and Water Leak Management for 31-story Building

As cities move toward more sustainable and efficient living, smart buildings are shaping the future of urban spaces. At Choovio, we support this shift by distributing reliable smart sensor solutions from our partner, Milesight. A recent example is the “Artisan Garden” project in Hong Kong.

The Challenge

Artisan Garden is a premium residential complex in the Ma Tau Kok area of Hong Kong. Developed by New World Development Company Limited and the Hong Kong Urban Renewal Authority, the 31 story building includes 294 units with a strong focus on sustainability. Like many properties, it faced challenges that affected efficiency and maintenance:

• Smart Waste Bin Management: Collection followed fixed schedules rather than actual fill levels, which caused inefficiency, extra labor, and environmental impact.
• Water Leak Detection: Leaks from pipes or faucets could create costly damage, especially in sensitive areas such as elevator pits. Early detection was essential.
• Network Deployment: The existing wired setup was not designed for modern IoT, limiting the ability to monitor the building effectively.

A smarter, more flexible system was needed to streamline daily operations.

The Solution: Milesight Smart Sensors

Milesight, deployed a suite of wireless sensors that upgraded the building without major infrastructure changes. The solution centered on accurate sensing, long range connectivity, and cloud based monitoring for fast response.

Milesight’s EM300-SLD, EM310-UDL, and UG65 products were selected for their reliability, ease of installation, and real time data delivery to the cloud.

1. Smart Waste Bin Management

To optimize waste collection, Milesight EM300-SLD ultrasonic level sensors were installed in waste bins. These devices measure fill level in real time so the management team can adjust pickup schedules based on actual need. The result is fewer trips, lower labor and fuel use, and a cleaner environment.

Water leaks pose a high risk to building assets. EM310-UDL spot leak detection sensors were placed near faucets and in elevator pits to catch small traces of moisture early. When water bridges the probes, the device triggers an immediate alert so staff can act before damage spreads.

3. Network Deployment Optimization

 UG65 LoRaWAN gateways were installed at strategic locations to provide strong, building wide coverage. These gateways connect sensors to the cloud and ensure stable communication even in areas with weaker signals.

• Wide Coverage: The UG65 gateways maintain connectivity across multiple floors and challenging areas.
• LoRaWAN Technology: Low-power, wide-area network (LPWAN) supports long battery life and long range links.
  
• Scalability: The network can grow easily as the building adds more smart devices.

Results

By adopting Milesight sensors, Artisan Garden improved efficiency, sustainability, and maintenance responsiveness:
